Carl Off’s masterpiece ‘Carmina Burana,’--Tom Brady: "the song they play when the team is in the stadium in the tunnel"

Track #15 on the Tom Brady iTunes Athlete nikeplus.com Inspirations Playlist is the first movement of the composer Carl Off’s masterpiece ‘Carmina Burana,’ called “O Fortuna.”
What do I mean by masterpiece? Well, I listen to Carmina Burana quite often at my home studio and love playing it for guests. Typical reply: “OH!!! This is that music from the movie ‘The Omen’ or ‘The Exorcist’! " (though it is not, some of the same haunted sounds are familiar). Truly, when you hear a sample of what might sound like an obscure piece of music you may say to yourself: “AH! That is where that music comes from!” The piece is in operatic mode, and is a classic in the mode of what Casablanca or Godfather II is to movies, or what Ali is to boxing or what ’60 Minutes’ is to television: a classic so perfect that one thinks: this had to be.

Carmina Burana has been recorded 1000s of times and the tempo for each section of any version, including this one by the London Symphony Orchestra & Richard Hickox is controlled by the conductor with speeds so variable as not to have one meanspeed–especially for O Fortuna, where the speeds/tempi literally cross the spectrum of audible music from 40 beats per minute past 300 beats per minute.

To me, if you’ve missed this one, it is like being a rock and roll fan and saying you never heard of “Jumping Jack Flash” by the Rolling Stones—almost beyond music, Carmina Burana is a wildly original, awesomely powerful piece of classical music written in the early 20th century. A comparison again: Mussorsky’s ‘Pictures At An Exhibition’: too original to be classified, a rare MUST.

It, the, is no surprise, then, when Tom Brady says this about this section of the piece:
“This is the song they play when the team is in the stadium in the tunnel waiting to be introduced. It gets the whole place on their feet.”

We at the Meanspeed Trust are not in the habit of actively recommending pieces of music where the message is, candidly: hey, check this out, or you will be missing out on one of the finest pieces of art ever created.

90 Seconds with Tom Brady: The quarterback's Playlist on iTunes: "...nice way to get fired up before you run out in front of 80,000 people..."

Tom Brady is a participant in the Nike Sports Music program available on iTunes. His list was released on September 26, 2006 and is available as an album or per song. On its site, Apple says: "Champion quarterback Tom Brady dishes on stadium anthems, team unity through music, and the reality of 6 a.m. workouts." There is one Free Download, which I transcribed below, simply called “90 seconds with Tom Brady,” (its actually 106 seconds!) where Tom talks about the role music plays in his athletic life. Tom: "Hey, what's up? This is Tom Brady. I usually work out early--I usually work out at about 6, so when I come in, just rolling out of bed, I feel like it's nice to come in there and put the headphones in my ear and get jamming right from the start. Especially when I like to start to warm up, I run on the treadmill for about ten or fifteen minutes to get my body loose and that’s the best time, because that time is cruising, is through before you know it and then I’m wide awake and I’m ready to get to get into the lift. I’ve got kind of an eclectic mix as you can see on my Playlist, I like all kinds of music. It tends to be more of the up-tempo. I like a lot rock, I like a lot of hip-hop, some pop. I’m always looking for the new artists—stuff that most people have never heard. When you get fired up and your adrenaline gets going and your heart starts pumping and everything’s racing and your energy goes up. There’s a lot of times we’ll go in there, pushing each other, whether we’re on squats or bench press. We do a lot of explosive jumping stuff—and you’re going for your personal record, we like to put on songs that are going to, like, set the tone for us. Well, I’ve got 52 other buddies in the locker room. You know, we pass music back and forth—because we’re all friends, we’re all around the same age, we have a lot of the same interests—well, you know a lot of the music gets passed around. We got a lot of artistic, creative guys—probably think they should be rap stars in our locker room rather than football players. They’re out there rapping on the practice field, before games. It’s important to everybody—because it does—it sets the tempo, it sets your mood. It’s a nice way to relax a nice way to relieve stress and a nice way to get fired up—especially before you run out in front of 80,000 people.”

Athlete's inspiration Playlist: Lindsay Davenport Interview setting up her iTunes playlist

One of the Nike related ‘Athlete Inspirations iTunes Playlist,’ tennis player Lindsay Davenport is interviewed for 90 seconds on a free download in a discussion where she highlights how music affects her life.
The following is a full transcription.
“Hi, this is Lindsay Davenport. I think tennis is an individual sport, I think it’s an individual preference about music and that’s a great thing that there are so many types of music that can help us get through different situations.
I really like alternative music and rock music to get me going before a match. I definitely have more of an interest in local, California bands—I know that a lot of the Orange County bands where I’m from certainly kinda dominates my playlist; Their music tends to get me happier—I don’t know if that’s a coincidence—or because I hear them more often on the radio stations down here.
I think having music during training helps put your mind kind of in one frame. It really kind of pumps me up and keeps me going so that I can finish exactly what I need to do.
It can also kind of calm your spirits down when you need it. If you’re too amped up or too nervous for some thing it can definitely, like, bring you back centered and get you a little bit more calm before you take the court or at the end of the match, when you’re coming off.
I do listen to music before I go out on the court. It normally is about the last twenty minute before I go out on court I kind of get all warmed up and do everything I need to do—and then when it’s just me sitting there closer to match time I kind of have a favorite playlist I try and listen to before I go out on court—and it gets me focused, hopefully and gets me kind of jumping around on my toes and gets me excited to go out there.”

Althlete Inspirations and Music Playlists: Dontrelle Willis for iTunes and nikeplus.com

www.uptempoairforums.com/

In this transcribed 90 second interview with Dontrelle Willis, iTunes explains: "inimitable pitcher
Dontrelle Willis shares the music that helps him keep it light--on the mound, in the weight room, and off-duty."

Over the last two days, we have seen the exact speeds and uses of all the songs available on the Althlete Inspirations iTunes nikeplus.com playlist. Why? Let Dontrelle explain!

This interview with Dontrelle Willis from the free iTunes preview of his playlist:
"What's up everyone? This is your boy, 'D-Train,' Dontrelle Willis. What goes through my head up on the mound is trying to get a guy out!
I think music does a great job for anybody to kind of get you in that state of mind where it’s just you and whatever you’re doing. I definitely have some songs that get me kinda into it and get me fired up and get me worked up to do my job.
It works especially for a pitcher, where I work once every fifth day, so it’s key for me to get in that state of mind when it’s my turn and go out there and pitch—you know the day that I pitch I definitely have some favorites where I like to kinda get motivated-- It’s not ‘easy listening’ to say the least [laughter]--to say the least!
I’ve been, ya know, mentioned in a couple of songs, [laughter] just because of how I pitch and the way I go about my work and what have you—and that’s a big honor to me, because you know: when you get mentioned in a song, that’s the biggest thing for me. You know, because other people in other occupations know what you’re doing.
Every time we win, you know, we always have music in the locker room, guys trying to celebrate, we definitely have CDs for that. And we keep winning, you know, we keep playing that same CD out into the street.
The guy who makes the best mixed CDs on our team is Lenny Harris—I mean, Lenny Harris: rock music, county, he has everything on there and it’s just a great playlist.

I definitely need to have music when I’m training because I feel like my body responds a little bit different when I have music as opposed to when I don’t. It feels like the music’s talking to me and the music’s helping me got that extra mile, you know that extra step to get better at what I’m doing."
