Throwback to 1950s-style pop combined with contemporary Hip-Hop: iTunes Single of the Week, K-OS, meanspeed=64.7 bpm, meanemotion=CEREMONY

The iTunes.com Single of the Week Free download is by an Alternative band called K-OS. As of 4 pm Eastern standard time, iTunes had neither an introduction about nor customer reviews—so we’re on our own.

The speed of the song, a song that was an odd combination of 90s hip-hop and 1950s do-wop triplets, a la Elvis, that certainly was worth the free download.

One of the main purposes set out in the mission statement of Meanspeed Music was the idea of keeping your old favorite songs fresh—keep them from getting played out. So with this song, well, it may not be the wildest masterpiece ever to hit the airwaves. But if the speed of ceremony is your thing, or you love those 1950s Elvis/Louis Armstrong/Fats Dominoe/Neil Sedaka/Otis Redding/everyone else (!) triplets, than this just may be a song for your playlist to keep your fresh your best. Throw this into the mix, and there is a change to recharge an old song. If you cannot measure the speed, please write me at Meanspeed@gmail.com and I’ll get back to you ASAP.

Elemental speeds:
A) meanspeed=64.7 beats per minute, with heavy use of triplets
B) meanemotion=ceremony
C) meanspace=0.927 seconds per beat

Bruce Springsteen, Tunnel Of Love, sheet music directions, meanspeeds and meanemotions of all 12 songs

In 1987, Bruce Springsteen released an album called Tunnel of Love, a most informative article about which may be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tunnel_of_Love_%28album%29. This album is a personal favorite of mine (some of you may recall Mission Springsteen, summer 2006) and is #475 on Rolling Stones’ list of the Top 500 Albums of All Time.
I measured all the elemental speeds of each song. In addition, I have the sheet music and will include the “official” Columbia Pictures sheet music directions.

The key line, according to my brother, comes at the end of the song Brilliant Disguise. “Tonight the bed is cold/I’m lost in the darkness of our love/God have mercy on the man/Who doubts what he’s sure of.”

meanspeed=88.8 beats per minute

Eminem, "Curtain Call"--Meanspeeds and meanemotions of all 24 songs, including "Stan," live at the 2001 Grammy Awards with Sir Elton John

These are the 24 meanspeeds and meanemotions from the "Deluxe" version of Eminem's album Curtain Call. An informative article regarding this album can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtain_Call:_The_Hits.

On this Meanspeed scale, developed in 1992:

30-54=mixed slow
55-58=melodrama
59-62=sincerity
63-69=ceremony
70-76=grace
77-78=bittersweetness
79-84=loneliness
85-89=renewal
90-97=enthusiasm
98-105=natural
106-113=lust
114-118=foreboding
119-128=victory
129-390=mixed fast,

We see that Eminem is versatile, honest and almost brutally frank in speed and emotional selection. What is most striking are the 5 songs at the speed of loneliness and 5 songs at the speed of renewal. "Lose Yourself," the song I think has been this generation's equivalent of "Like A Rolling Stone" in terms of political impact, is at the speed of renewal—a reason, you think, the song is on almost everyone's playlist?

The most brilliant remake of the decade? Alanis Morissette, 'Jagged Little Pill': Sheet Music directions and all Electric Speeds, all Acoustic Speeds

The 1995 electric Jagged Little Pill is the third studio album and first internationally released album released by Canadian singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette. The album was remade for a tenth anniversary Acoustic version.

There are exciting elements to the acoustic version. As a parallel top the electric version, it creates a three-way mirror in the listener’s head. The songs are the same, but he orchestration is toned down, mellowed and made to soothe at times where the original was meant to shock. Sometimes, as you will see below, the speeds are in the same meanemotion range, sometimes not. Here’s what shocked me: every acoustic song, as I could well guess by the measurements, was recorded on an electric sequencing device—in other words, from beginning to end, there is no acceleration or deceleration of the underlying speed of the song. Ah. So what? The same is true for the original Jagged Little Pill. Glenn Ballard, one of the top 10 most influential popular music producers of the last 50 years somehow brings the best out of musicians by literally forcing them to play in strict time.

What makes the greatest musicians? No one knows. My opinion is that the greatest can play on sequencers as this album, and upon listening, dare anyone to say whether the song was recorded live (these were not) or recorded on top of an electronic device. I could not tell—in fact, until the measurements, I had thought Alanis was playing live in the studio wit a band. She may have been—but if she did, they were all playing on top of a sequencer—all standard recording procedure. What is particularly refreshing is the fact that all the speeds are whole numbers—notice how in most songs, there is a spot, or a finger print: 74.3 beats per minute, many songs are literally 74.07 beats per minute—hence the reason you see sites as http://www.bpmdatabase.com plead that if you submit speeds of song, that you “round them off to the whole number” (something which I will not do). So said, as with very few albums---Genesis’ 1990 The Way We Walk is the same—each speed is a pure whole number. This in itself signifies bold, exceptional musicians. Here, Alanis sounds fantastic, and the musicians could not be any better, the orchestration and production are perfect.

Below are the speeds of the indicated in the Hal Leonard sheet music I bought this afternoon at the Colony at 49th and Broadway, the 1995 electric version speed and meanemotion, the 2005 acoustic speed and lastly the meanemotions to the songs on the acoustic version.

Because of the hype over Alanis’s second, third and fourth efforts in making albums, and the disappointments lying therein, this acoustic Jagged Little Pill was underrated. Frankly, many of the speeds we post are more enjoyable than others.

Congratulations on a fantastic album—and we look forward to a new studio album this year from the self described “Canadian-American” musician and actress Alanis Morissette.

Justin Timberlake, "Cry Me A River," meanspeed=73.9, meanemotion=grace, therefore payback=well, you know, Revenge=Sweet

“Cry Me A River” is a song that is 73.9 beats per minute, a speed which has a preponderance of songs that emote “grace” according to this scale, developed in 1992, after measuring the speeds of 10,000 Western popular songs:

30-54=mixed slow
55-58=melodrama
59-62=sincerity
63-69=ceremony
70-76=grace
77-78=bittersweetness
79-84=loneliness
85-89=renewal
90-97=enthusiasm
98-105=natural
106-113=lust
114-118=foreboding
119-128=victory
129-390=mixed fast, where each number is speed as beats per minute.

As I wrote yesterday, a woman must know, as he calmly, with poise and grace in the video—a true act of revenge: He makes the statement: If you want to sexually betray that of a Justin Timberlake, the price you will pay is very high. He’s getting by just fine, Thank You Very Much. It is she, and in this case after the woman at whom the song was made freaked out this weekend, shaved her head, you know the rest, that will pay the price. This is the guy who brought sexy back. Betray him? You will pay. And Cry A River.

iTunes Single of the Week/free download-- Consequence, “Callin’ Me” meanspeed=99.0 beats per minute, meanemotion=Natural

This week’s iTunes “Single of the Week” is by Consequence and [his] song: “Callin’ Me.”
iTunes is an enormous stage upon which to be featured, and this is why the Apple owned music site chose this song this week, in their own words:
“First, a little back story. Consequence used to be heavily involved with the A Tribe Called Quest crew and can now count Kanye West as a friend and producer. For this track from his debut, ‘Don’t Quit Your Day Job,’ Consequence keeps it mellow and heavy with a funky snare loop that hits like a bomb. His writing style is quit witted and smooth.”

Justin Timberlake, "What Goes Around…/…Comes Around"--meanemotion=Grace, meanspeed=76 beats per minute: Lust, Betrayal and the Power of Karma

The Number One downloaded video for today is Justin Timberlake's "What Goes Around…/…Comes Around." The elemental speed of the song is 76.0 beats per minute, thus falling into the meanemotion of Grace.

On this Meanspeed scale, developed in 1992:

30-54=mixed slow
55-58=melodrama
59-62=sincerity
63-69=ceremony
70-76=grace
77-78=bittersweetness
79-84=loneliness
85-89=renewal
90-97=enthusiasm
98-105=natural
106-113=lust
114-118=foreboding
119-128=victory
129-390=mixed fast
,

why do we label the emotive element of the song 'Grace ' and not 'Loneliness'? Because "meanemotions" are about the expression inherent in the time sequencing of the beat. Thus, while James Blunt's "You're Beautiful," which is 6 beats per minute faster, would at first thought be the song that has an emotional expression of Grace, it does not work that way. Meanemotions are about the attitude of the expression of the song.

Therefore, in Justin's video of "What Goes Around…/…Comes Around," although his love interest, played by the actress Scarlett Johansson, is unfaithful to him, Justin remain poised, confident and almost mocking. In a case of instant karma, the love interest that cheated is burned up in a car crash at the end of the song. Mr. Timberlake is shown with his arms spread out, singing the song in mansions with a sense of satisfaction without arrogance.
There is no "I told you so"—J.T. just does not need them. He's saying: If you want to fool around on that of a Justin Timberlake, well, what goes around comes around.

In contrast, James Blunt's plaintive whining, "You're beautiful, you're beautiful, you're beautiful, it's true/I saw your face/In a crowded place and I don't know what to do," emotes loneliness.

This is the heart of the irony that made me see the patterns in Meanspeed theory—after listening to thousands of examples of the same situation: nature's trick. It is the speed slightly slower that emotes poise, confidence and gratitude—grace. It is only when an almost indiscernible 5% more speed is added that we find a category of loneliness (79-84 beats per minute).

If it were not for a rhythm exercise using a metronome, I never would have noticed it. I didn't invent it, I didn't patent it—it's just a pattern in nature.

Meanspeed Music measures the precise speed of a piece. The scale which we have used since 1993:

30-54=mixed slow
55-58=melodrama
59-62=sincerity
63-69=ceremony
70-77=grace
77-78=bittersweetness
79-84=loneliness
85-89=renewal
90-97=enthusiasm
98-105=natural
106-113=lust
114-118=foreboding
119-128=victory
129-390=mixed fast,

All numbers represent speed as beats per minute. Each correlative is an emotional expression of the speed of the music rather than the emotional reaction of the listener. For example, just as Sting says, “Happy songs make me miserable,” lonely songs may make Mr. A or Ms. B feel graceful. For more information visit http://

iTunes Single of the Week: Jesus from Savior to a metaphor for an artist's infatution: Borne, "The Guide" meanspace=666 milliseconds per beat

This week’s iTunes Single of the Week, downloadable free this week only, is a song by Borne, called “The Guide,” a song that shines as a symbol for what we can do here and what we cannot do if the West is overtaken.
What does that mean? In the song, Borne sings about the joy of his new love. The song blasphemes Christianity in the process: the love object, presumably a woman, has become such an important focus of the Borne’s attention that we are told, “You are, My Jesus/You are, My Savior…” Is it an accident that there are 666 milliseconds for each beat he plays? Yes! A numerical quirk only, sorry.
Ok—he’s rocketed into enthusiasm by this new love-- I can understand that. But: “You are my Jesus, you are my Savior???” Sex is the only religion left, apparently, for many. I saw Sting last year with Annie Lennox where Gordon pronounced: “Music and sex are the only religion.” Ok, whatever. Flaunt that atheism!—Lord knows I’ve seen enough tacky crucifixes in my day, so why not proclaim your atheism, as this song does?
There are so many “blasphemous” songs, you say—why single this one out for criticism? Answer: there’s a term we all know and we all know why I cannot use it—but it is a word that describes a man that is, well, overly in love with his woman. I’ve been there—I can understand that completely. What baffles me is the ‘Jesus/Savior’ line. In other religions, using parallel terms for the [Force], you’d get beheaded in town square—a Fatwah might even be issued against your whole family.
Put it this way: Borne, if she’s your Jesus and Savior: great! Just make sure you don’t fall out of love with her, then in love with a strict Islamist and start throwing parallel language around, ok? There are enough fatwahs against the West in general already.
The elemental speeds of the recording are:

meanspeed=90.1 beats per minute, as a waltz
meanemotion=enthusiasm
meanspace=0.666 seconds per beat
