The Showman of Our Generation, Barry Manilow: 'Greatest Songs Of The Fifties,' a meanspeed music theory view of speeds of each track

The Showman Of Our Generation, Mr. Barry Manilow, c. 1979

Barry Manilow, known in the industry as “The Showman of Our Generation,” released an album in 2006 called: Greatest Songs of the Fifties in 2005 on January 31, 2006. A significant album for Barry Manilow, it finds the Showman taking on songs that were popular in his youth. The project also marked Manilow's return to his former label, Arista, with the company's founder, Clive Davis, setting the singer up with 1950s pop classics much in the way that the savvy businessman steered Rod Stewart in the direction of jazzy standards in his successful The Great American Songbook project. The album was a huge hit in the United States. It endered the Billboard 200 at No. 1, giving the second chart-topping album of Barry Manilow's career. His only other No. 1 album was Barry Manilow Live, in 1977. This is also the highest-debuting album of his career, selling over 150,000 copies in its opening week.

Madonna's Confessions On A Dance Floor, in its entirety: Self-congratulations, well earned, expressed in music and speed

Madonna’s Confessions On A Dance Floor fascinates me from a speed point of view. To me, it is her, well, Eminem album or Mary J. Blige album—deservedly so, I think. All three: came from literally nothing, trailer parks, donut shops and nasty urban areas to do, long story short, what everyone told them was an impossible pie-in-the-sky dream, and even as a celebrity, being daily kicked in the teeth in words in gossip, on tv, online.

So it is no surprise to me that the age of forty-whatever, Madonna is self-proclaiming victory. Of twelve tracks, Meanspeed music theory expressive categories, or, put simply, “meanemotions” of victory, speed range=119-128 beats per minute (“bpm”), make up eight tracks. There is a song of Enthusiasm aptly titled Push, and three songs at a speed we have just been calling mixed fast—anything over 128.

The title of the last track tells it all, Like It Or Not tells it all: she is saying in song after song: you all have trashed me, but look who is still on top? Who destroyed the odds? As Eminem: what are the chances of some white dude from a trailer park becoming a rap mega-mogul be? One in a trillion? Agent 19.5 is on a special mission and was due to report on Mary Blige’s take on the Madonna on the dance floor issue, but the satellite went out—it happens.

Mary J. Blige, 'Breakthrough'- Let pain make you stronger lest it kill you, and you will prevail-- Speeds of the album

Mary J. Bliges’s album Breakthrough is one of Whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger—a message she drives home in song after song on this Grammy multi-nominated album.
Songs about painful loneliness (79-89 beats per minute, or “bpm”) and renewal (85-89 bpm) give way to a natural (98-105 bpm), victorious (119-128 bpm), graceful (70-76 bpm), enthusiastic (90-97 bpm) woman.
Songs with meanemotions of melodrama (55-58 bpm), bittersweetness (77-78 bpm), lust (106-113 bpm) and foreboding (114-118 bpm) and mixed fast (129 and above) are each avoided.

Mary is all about: facing loneliness head on, feel the pain of it, and let it make you stronger lest it kill you: hence her many songs of loneliness trumped by enthusiasm. From what speed range come most of Mary’s most popular songs? Meanemotion: Enthusiasm, 90-97 bpm.

Clay Aiken's 'A Thousand Different Ways': A breakdown of the elements of speed to this entire album of ballads across a variety of slow speeds

On September 19, 2006 the universal cultural phenomenon Clay Aiken released his second album, made up of cover songs, called A Thousand Different Ways. Apple's iTunes.com lists each track here under its genre: ‘pop.’ There is a recording company responsible for Clay’s intellectual property: A Thousand Different Ways, ©2006, 19 Recordings Limited.

Clay shows a surprisingly adept manner of handling speed and tempo in a variety of slow ballad to mid-tempo ballad ranges: we hear the meanemotion ranges of surreal (below 55 beats per minute), melodrama (55-58 beats per minute), sincerity (59-62 beats per minute), ceremony (63-69 beats per minute), grace (70-76 beats per minute), loneliness (79-84 beats per minute), renewal (85-89 beats per minute) and natural (98-105 beats per minute). Hence, you will find no songs in the speed ranges of: bittersweetness (77-78 beats per minute), enthusiasm (90-97 beats per minute), lust (106-114 beats per minute), foreboding (115-118 beats per minute), victory (119-128 beats per minute) or mixed fast (129 and above). This Clay Aiken work is not about fast and lusting. This is about deep ceremonial introspection. This is a man singing the modern ballads with truth, honesty and from the heart.

One of the greatest MTV Unplugged concerts: 10,000 Maniacs: Augustyniak/Buck/Drew/Merchant, elemental speed measurements

One of the best MTV Unplugged concerts was: 10,000 Maniacs. All songs are labeled “Rock” in the iTunes, in re: "genre."
The concert was recorded in 1993--we think the grooves stand the test of 14 years---that's what agent 009 and I think, anyway. This may have been Natalie Merchant's peak, or pre-peak, as she was amazing on her Tigerlily 1995 tour, after leaving 10,000 Maniacs at their peak.
