American Apartheid, though undesigned, in New York and the US in general, Grows despite a Show by the Dave Matthews Band, Caroline Kennedy and Taxes

This post began on September 13, 2006 grows once per year.
If anything has changed, the apartheid system has only grown more pronounced. In fact, as I write today, July 18, 2007, the situation in the New York City high school system is out of to the extent that many in the "educated community" are calling for privatization of all of the schools. I am 44 years old, so never would have imagined, say, in 1975, a day where the entire New York City area would become so split with a Have versus have not society, or the "two America's" as put by Senator John Edwards - in words that are all too painfully true. Not anyone can deny it, but neither is it an person's fault. The pace of digitization and globalization of the world has been changed everything. Capitalism itself could not keep up with software, and the have and have not's are becoming easier to see - and it is painful, as all things, especially when the country comes near to a anniversary of being at war for 6 very long years.
But what if there was no war, and all the money for war went into the public school system? History has shown: taxing and spending will not solve the problem. I live within 10 miles of Newark New jersey - come see the 40 year after effect of tax and spend policies -all well meaning, most failures with consequences that still make some of the "welfare" cities of the U.S. look like war zones. Is Oakland, California, safe? Let us say, if you might be a lost stranger at night on "that" side of town in, uh, St. Louis- did anyone *plan* for such wreckage and poverty? No. It just happened. We all watched it. Did anyone *do* it on purpose? No - as much a a certain faty man would love that, as another movie could be made by which he could whine like a chicken. Jazz? Just happened. Divided schools, despite decades of enforced "desegregation programs"? Just stayed that way. No one could do it of the tried.
The United States had the money to integrate the schools - not so much for the sake of racial integration, as one is more likely to see an interracial couple than a "pure race" couple on the streets of New York City and more of the United States than any time in our history - but for the sake of a quality education. The children who are slammed into the public school system in New York City start live 20 steps behind, as their rich neighbors 4 or 5 blocks south sped 30 or 40 thousand dollars per child to keep her out of the public system and into that system, well, no one says it, but, you know...the faces are white, the students wear uniforms, and the graduates go to Wellesley, Smith, Amherst, and better yet Ivy league schools and become presidents, doctors and movie stars. For example, New Yorkers Sigourney Weaver and Stockard Channing went to the Ethel Walker School The Chapin School respectively, a few blocks from here. They changed their name - they were each baptized as Susan. You know, though, one must have fun in Prep school No one calls preparatory school "high school," or if they do, it is to sound 'tough', but comes across as is: disingenuous in the extreme. No one is to blame for this. If Dave Matthews decides to have three children and pay for an expensive prep school, is that the fault of their child? Should they be forced to go to school with those in public school? It is a state to state issue, with national legal precedents, many of which are now up in the confused air with a new court with one of the strongest and most powerful groups of Justices we have had in decades. I've seen Caroline Kennedy pick up her kids from school. It is not a public school. From September 2006 -
In September 2002, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, daughter of President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, and the Dave Matthews Band coordinated efforts to bring about: a benefit concert by the band, all revenue going to New York City public schools.
An outstanding effort all around: If any institution deserves all the extra help, especially one that reflects the improving urban race relations, it is the inner-city public school. Remember To Sir With Love and Blackboard Jungle? Well, here in good old New York City the Spence or Regis School have a set of standards, and so do anonymous public schools all over the "five boroughs" of New York City: Staten Island, Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan. I call it—Unintentionally--the last form of American apartheid. The radical difference in the cost and quality of the schools as viewed black and white. Quite simply, though everyone is just too darned polite to say it, “white” people largely “send” their children to private, expensive schools in New York City, while the poor and most immigrants are treated to a different education experience entirely. This concert helped close that gap, and all were commended at the time, and deservedly so.
Dave Matthews is South African and emigrated here [in his late teens]. The Dave Matthews Band is bizarre to me: the band is 3/5 “black”--Carter Beauford, drums, Boyd Tinsley, woodwinds and reed instruments of all types, LeRoi Moore, electric violin, 2/5 “white”-Dave Matthews, vocals and guitar and Stefan Lessard, bass guitars of all kinds—yet the audience looks, well, like a football stadium, IE, where are the black fans? Whatever—as a country we get better at empathy and tolerance all the time. Race relations in the 27 years I have lived in New York City are excellent to the point of being surreal—especially compared to the Crack Epidemic days of the 1980s, where brutal racial crimes were a daily event. No more, and everyone is happy about that. The taboo question: what effect did September 11, 2001 have on race relations in New York City? In my opinion, just surviving became such a priority that people simply lost energy for racial bias and stereotypes in many situations which may have been heated if same situation occurred in 1987.
Grey Street is a song that the band plays that really doesn’t “mean” anything—it is based on a four-chord vamp in B minor—and the whole song is the “groove.” Tomorrow we will look at this in the studio. And maybe the best pop/rock rhythm section of all time.
And I did not forget the Springsteen test. That will be completed tomorrow—it was just that after 35 listening in 2 days the lines “rise up! Rise up!” began to sound like that commercial for the underarm antiperspirant called Sure; hence, I thought a break from the song was in order, lest I think of Bruce an armpit sundry product spokesperson.
All the speed graphs above are based one the same numerical measurements.
The Speed Summary of Grey Street, live from Central Park, September 2002, from the DVD are:
meanspeed=104.1 beats per minute.
meanemotion=natural.
mean beat=1.735 beats per second.
meanspace=576 milliseconds per beat.
mean phase=1.735 cycles per second.
mean pitch=444.160 Hertz, 17 cents above G#4/Ab4=415.305 Hertz, 83 cents below A4=440.000 Hertz.
