Carl Off’s masterpiece ‘Carmina Burana,’--Tom Brady: "the song they play when the team is in the stadium in the tunnel"

photo courtesy of: www.amazon.ca/.../offer-listing/-/B00001P4RG/all

Track #15 on the Tom Brady iTunes Athlete nikeplus.com Inspirations Playlist is the first movement of the composer Carl Off’s masterpiece ‘Carmina Burana,’ called “O Fortuna.”
What do I mean by masterpiece? Well, I listen to Carmina Burana quite often at my home studio and love playing it for guests. Typical reply: “OH!!! This is that music from the movie ‘The Omen’ or ‘The Exorcist’! " (though it is not, some of the same haunted sounds are familiar). Truly, when you hear a sample of what might sound like an obscure piece of music you may say to yourself: “AH! That is where that music comes from!” The piece is in operatic mode, and is a classic in the mode of what Casablanca or Godfather II is to movies, or what Ali is to boxing or what ’60 Minutes’ is to television: a classic so perfect that one thinks: this had to be.

Carmina Burana has been recorded 1000s of times and the tempo for each section of any version, including this one by the London Symphony Orchestra & Richard Hickox is controlled by the conductor with speeds so variable as not to have one meanspeed–especially for O Fortuna, where the speeds/tempi literally cross the spectrum of audible music from 40 beats per minute past 300 beats per minute.

To me, if you’ve missed this one, it is like being a rock and roll fan and saying you never heard of “Jumping Jack Flash” by the Rolling Stones—almost beyond music, Carmina Burana is a wildly original, awesomely powerful piece of classical music written in the early 20th century. A comparison again: Mussorsky’s ‘Pictures At An Exhibition’: too original to be classified, a rare MUST.

It, the, is no surprise, then, when Tom Brady says this about this section of the piece:
“This is the song they play when the team is in the stadium in the tunnel waiting to be introduced. It gets the whole place on their feet.”

We at the Meanspeed Trust are not in the habit of actively recommending pieces of music where the message is, candidly: hey, check this out, or you will be missing out on one of the finest pieces of art ever created.

90 Seconds with Tom Brady: The quarterback's Playlist on iTunes: "...nice way to get fired up before you run out in front of 80,000 people..."

Tom Brady is a participant in the Nike Sports Music program available on iTunes. His list was released on September 26, 2006 and is available as an album or per song. On its site, Apple says: "Champion quarterback Tom Brady dishes on stadium anthems, team unity through music, and the reality of 6 a.m. workouts." There is one Free Download, which I transcribed below, simply called “90 seconds with Tom Brady,” (its actually 106 seconds!) where Tom talks about the role music plays in his athletic life. Tom: "Hey, what's up? This is Tom Brady. I usually work out early--I usually work out at about 6, so when I come in, just rolling out of bed, I feel like it's nice to come in there and put the headphones in my ear and get jamming right from the start. Especially when I like to start to warm up, I run on the treadmill for about ten or fifteen minutes to get my body loose and that’s the best time, because that time is cruising, is through before you know it and then I’m wide awake and I’m ready to get to get into the lift. I’ve got kind of an eclectic mix as you can see on my Playlist, I like all kinds of music. It tends to be more of the up-tempo. I like a lot rock, I like a lot of hip-hop, some pop. I’m always looking for the new artists—stuff that most people have never heard. When you get fired up and your adrenaline gets going and your heart starts pumping and everything’s racing and your energy goes up. There’s a lot of times we’ll go in there, pushing each other, whether we’re on squats or bench press. We do a lot of explosive jumping stuff—and you’re going for your personal record, we like to put on songs that are going to, like, set the tone for us. Well, I’ve got 52 other buddies in the locker room. You know, we pass music back and forth—because we’re all friends, we’re all around the same age, we have a lot of the same interests—well, you know a lot of the music gets passed around. We got a lot of artistic, creative guys—probably think they should be rap stars in our locker room rather than football players. They’re out there rapping on the practice field, before games. It’s important to everybody—because it does—it sets the tempo, it sets your mood. It’s a nice way to relax a nice way to relieve stress and a nice way to get fired up—especially before you run out in front of 80,000 people.”

Lindsay Davenport: "think about what [you] really want to accomplish"-Where Are You Going? Dave Matthews Band, meanemotion=enthusiasm, meanspeed=97.1

The next to last track from the Lindsay Davenport nikeplus.com iTunes Athlete Inspiration Playlist is a song by the Dave Matthews Band called "Where Are You Going." The tennis phenomenon says:
"I think about this song in terms of where you are going in your life, what your plans are for the next few years. I think everyone could sit down and think about what they really want to accomplish, where they want to go with their lives. I've always felt really connected to this song."

In regard to the song, it is one that is also on football quarterback Tom Brady's Playlist, and this is the song analyzed by meanspeed music theory:

As we have been asserting here at Meanspeed Trust, finding the songs that psyche you up can improve mental performance. Sometimes this enhanced mental performance is exhibited by the best athletes in the world.

iTunes
has embarked on a most fantastic project: putting together the playlists of the best athletes alive--and not surprisingly, such athletes have near perfect mental control in regard to timing. Therefore, on these pages we are most happy to begin featuring songs from these lists.

Two of my favorite athletes, Tom Brady, the quarterback of the New England Patriots and Lindsay Davenport, one of the best female tennis players to ever play the game both have shared their playlists with iTunes.

One song that is an absolute favorite of mine which is the only song common to both Tom's playlist and Lindsay's playlist is the song by the Dave Mathews Band, featuring drummer Carter Beauford, bass player Stefan Lessard, woodwinds player LeRoi Moore, violinist Boyd Tinsley. In sits in the meanemotion of enthusiasm: almost right at the top speed of that category, which meanspeed music theory asserts as 90-97 beats per minute. This song is especially fantastic, and I would encourage anyone to check out the athlete's playlists and Dave's songs on iTunes.

On a personal note, I turned 44 years old a couple of days ago, and I am still in wonder over the online/digital music in general:
a) the personalization of musical playlists,;
b) the ease with which one can explore the songs they like online in the comfort of [our] own homes;
c) the back-to-the-1970s FAIR price of 99¢ per single have made using music; and
d) the mental control that can be achieved through music, and the speed of that music .

The Meanspeed Frequencies™ of the song Where Are You Going are:
meanspeed=97.1 beats per minute
meanemotion=enthusiastic
meanspace=0.618 seconds per beat
meanphase=1.528 beats per second
meanpitch=414.293 hertz, 96 cents above G4=391.995 Hertz, 4 cents below G#4/Ab4=415.305 Hertz.

Beyonce, "Irreplaceable", top iTunes download today, meanemotion=rebirth, meanspeed=88.0 beats per minute

The #1 most downloaded song this morning on iTunes is a song by Beyonce called "Irreplaceable."

iTunes has provided us with an "iTunes review":

"Glamour girl Beyonce busts out. She has certainly had her funky moments-need we even mention "Crazy In Love"?--but until B'Day, she's never laid so many of them end to end. With producers Rodney Jerkins and Rich Harrison (who hooked up with both "Crazy" and Amerie's " 1 Thing with vintage funk-soul samples), B'day has the superstar trying on one street-style after another--and they all fit. Whether a thumping chant with clipped delivery ("Get Me Bodied") or a playful duet with "friend" Jay-Z ("Upgrade U," which posits Beyonce competition for Mary J. Blige in the no-nonnsense sweepstakes), she handles the material with aplomb: These may be her best, most assured performances. Even the two ballads ("Irreplaceable," with its step team hook, and "Resentment,' which draws heavily on Curtis Mayfield's "Think") feel like they have dirt on them. Beyonce wears it well."
