Meanspeed Avoidance: Aerosmith, "Dream On,"--studio version and live version, meanemotion=lonely and graceful, trying to avoid Bittersweet

Three of the sven speed graphs above feature the song "Dream On" by Aerosmith alone, as it is performed on the CD called 'Classics Live.'

The four of the seven speed charts at the top represent a comparison of the speed performance of the song as it is played in the studio, charts and frequencies thereof were posted yesterday, with the speed performance of the song live.

This is a case of "Meanspeed Avoidance." We will see more examples of it in the days and weeks to come. Notice how the song is comfortable as a lonely song, as played in the studio, or a song of grace, as it is performed on stage--and the song in both cases plays many bets and measures in the meanspeed --77-78 beats per minute, or, the square root of 60 seconds multiplied by ten. We saw this with Pearl Jam and their song "Black." The meanspeed, or "bittersweet" meanemotion, is very difficult to maintain, especially on stage, as are the emotions. It is easier to mourn something and be lonely about it than it is to say a long "good"-bye to [it], and it it is easier to be graceful in their presence than maintaining the, well, way too long good-bye scenes, all scenes of which we are all experienced and I think probably wince in pain just thinking about the really bad good-byes.

Aerosmith singles chronology
Somebody Dream On One Way Street

"Dream On" is a classic blues rock song in the key of F minor by Aerosmith from their 1973 debut album, "Aerosmith". This power ballad became their first major hit. Although it peaked at #59 when it was originally released as a single back in 1973, it became a Top 10 single in 1976, when it was re-released as a single. This song was first played live in Willimantic, CT at the Shaboo Inn.

The song was sampled by rap artist Eminem for his song Sing for the Moment from his 2002 album The Eminem Show. The song was re-made by Andru Donalds as the cover song for their album of the same name. It has been covered by Ronnie James Dio (vocals) with Yngwie Malmsteen (flamenco guitar).

This song was used in Buick's commercials, corresponding with their slogan, "Dream Up".

The song made an appearance as the closing theme to the Disney movie Miracle, and was also used in the closing credits of the movie Last Action Hero. It was used in the opening cut scene for the Tecmo video game Dead or Alive Ultimate.

The song "Dream On" is part of the The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list.[1] It is also ranked #172 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time..."

Aerosmith, "Dream On," studio version, meanspeed=79.0 beats per minute, meanemotion=Lonely

”Dream On” is a song by Aerosmith. The meanspeed=79.0 beats per minute, the meanemotion=lonely, meanspace=0.759 seconds between beats, meanphase=1.317 cycles per second, meanpitch=337.067 Hertz, 40 cents above E4=329.628 Hertz, 60 cents below F4=349.228 Hertz.
This is a song that is told in diary form about aging. Wring by Steven Tyler in the late 1970s, this is a song of contemplation and introspection, especially for one of the most successful and longest lasting bands of the last 20th century. The song seems to be an abstract poem to oneself about: making the best of what’s around now, as tomorrow you may look in the mirror and see, as Tyler sings, “all these lines on my face”. After all, as they continue, “the past is gone, it went by…everybody’s got their dues in life to pay.” Musically, the song feature a duality of sounds—verse sections that have quiet melodic sections with complex harmonies, especially for such a “hard” rock band, followed by the sections where the band is urging us to grab life by the horns while we can (“Dream on! Dream until your dream come true!!”), lest one decline into old age and loneliness.
I used to perform this song with professional singer Jeremy Pomerantz of New Jersey—and I include it hear because Jeremy was not much of a metal-rock fan—he was a professional Broadway man—the song really has a special quality about it. Tyler is the American Mick Jagger—relevant, sexy and popular into their 50s and 60s.
The first half of the songs features sections that move with ease amongst the categories of Lonely, Bittersweet and Graceful. As you can see, as soon as the song hits the midpoint, at a time where the “hardness’ chorus rips through the song, the remainder is fully in the speed of lonely. This is a type of lonely that says: Loneliness, I defy you. It’s a rebellious lonely. The live version of this song, also legally available and available by request here at meanspeed.com, shows almost the opposite speed performance—where the song starts in the lonely ranges and ultimately settles into Graceful. We’d love to hear your comments about the message difference. In this studio version, the emphasis is loneliness and ‘getting over the fact that we all grow old’ and making the best of each day. The live version seems to come back to the speed of grace from: the love of the crowd. Like the speed of Foreboding, many of the Lonely speed songs played live are played at a different speed. From beginning to end, the studio version seen on the graph linked to the description accelerates at approximately 4-5 percent.

John Denver's all time Greatest Hit, "Take Me Home, Country Roads" meanspeed=82.1 beats per minute, meanemotion=Loneliness

Objective Speed Review

August 29, 2005
Artist: John Denver
CD: Best of John Denver

"Like vinegar on a wound is one who sings songs to a heavy heart." -Proverbs 25:20

"I hate happy songs. Happy songs make me miserable." Sting, c. 20th century

In order to see the patterns that I now call "mean speed music theory" or "Meanspeed theory," I saw about 200 songs grouped together by speed. Some songs I were more familiar with than other songs.

That initial discovery took pl ace in July 1988, and after calibrating 5,000 songs of all popular types (yes, I can certainly be criticized for staying with what is 'popular)-a cursory lists of my beats per minutes so shows. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of songs are released on CD and online per minute. So my current list of about 11,000 is all about *narrowing down* the popular-but-meaningful from, well, everything else. To the extent that some of the material on this site was copyrighted in 1992 was because of the *discretion* and the *lack* of some monster amount of songs from which to make wild inductions.

Ok. So now the list is, as above, 11,000. Of all of them, three above all bothered me-they didn't fit Ian Schneider's little theory, and they couldn't seem to be explained away as "joke" songs or "songs by someone else that the singer was just toying with" (like Clapton did to himself in his 'shuffle' version of Layla-more on that in another space). So what a great relief this week when I reviewed John Denver's Greatest Hits! And what songs do I mean? Well, of course "Take Me Home Country Roads" (the most Western popular song in the history of China, and according to a man in my building named Pat, "really huge in Ireland." And Pat knows his Irish music. And "Rocky Mountain High," a song who's rights were apparently bought out Peter Coors-so Mr. Coors.

Anyway, when I grew up, I knew these songs, well, very well. Everyone did-mid-late 70s, golden boy John Denver, who was considered such an angel that he plays a grocery store , manager who sees god in "Oh God!"-of course God (played by George "George" Burns) has to choose a man of the fine spirit and utter wholesome-itude. Who better than the never-acted-before Denver?

And growing up, beating away are these two songs that I think are supposed to reflect happiness, make me feel as high as Colorado, as close to Virginia. Then, I don't know, one day, I just had to admit to myself that both these songs were just truly miserable. And look at the speeds-Denver released 21 versions of each song (approximately), but let us say it is quite safe to know that the speeds for *both* songs are approximately 82 beats per minute, *smack in the middle* in a group of songs that simply reek of loneliness. And I said-true-"now he walks in quiet solitude…" "he was born in the summer of his 27th year.."---man, talk about lonely. And in Take me home, Country Roads, a double abstraction-a mind-bender that Denver sneaks in: "I get a feeling that I should have been home yesterday…." He drives it home…."…yesterday!" There it is. Abstraction #1: driving down the road and getting a feeling of something that you can never feel again, rather, something that you "should" have felt, and then removed again: Abstraction #2--…"yesterday!" Whoa. Talk about the danger of cell phones and driving. I hope Mr. Denver was driving safely when he wrote this. I mean, even Einstein had to *sit* in his train to invent his ideas.

So my point, kind readers, is that as searches of meanspeed where just calibrating the songs on your own will show, the songs below are deep deep in lonely-land, speed-wise. Know what though? Neil Young does this quite a bit, so do a few others: take the lonely speed (often make it a cut 2/4 country stomp like Take Me Home Country Road, Come A Time by Neil Young, I Am A Child by Young), and make the best of the happiness. Foreigner tried it with "I wanna know What Love Is." Huge comeback hit for them-everyone can relate to expressing loneliness in the form a desire to rejoin the community.

The MeanFrequencies of "Take Me Home, Country Roads" are:
meanspeed=82.1 beats per minute.
meanemotion=Loneliness.

Lost to Dylan in court, but song still rocks! Hootie and the Blowfish, "ONLY WANNA BE WITH YOU," meanemotion=natural, meanspeed=103.4 beats per minute

Only Wanna Be With You is a pop song released in 1995 by Hootie & the Blowfish, the third single from their breakthrough album Cracked Rear View. It peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States, #3 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, and #2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. It is most noted by its music video, which took the artistic form of an episode of ESPN SportsCenter. In addition to SportsCenter anchors Dan Patrick, Keith Olbermann, Mike Tirico, Charley Steiner and Chris Berman, several athletes were included. Among those appearing were golfer Fred Couples, basketball player Alonzo Mourning, and football player Dan Marino. The video was nominated in the Best Group Video category at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards. Five lines from Bob Dylan's song "Idiot Wind" are quoted in the song, leading to a lawsuit. The song is at the speed of natural, the speed which we all found out last week coresponds to the universal, unisexual speed of sexual climactic pulses.

The MeanFrequencies of Only Wanna Be With You are: meanspeed=103.4 beats per minute. meanemotion=natural.
meanspace=0.580 seconds between beats.

meanphase=1.723 beats per second.

meanpitch=441.173 Hertz, 4.5 cents above A4=440.000 Hertz, 95.5 cents below Bb4=466.164 Hertz.

Out of the Climax and into the Graceful: James Taylor, "Carolina In My Mind," meanemotion=grace. How probatory science rescued James Taylor Speed!

These are speed graphs of contiguously measured 4 quarter note beat measures of the song "Carolina In My Mind" by the singer and song craftsman James Taylor. This is literally a song about how beautiful the world is in general, everything from flying geese to getting backstabbed by a friend is made to sound effortless, beautiful, charming. James practically sanctifies the beauty of the cute old dog that bites. Well, at another speed, that might just sound angry or sarcastic. But the slide guitars, the musical expertise in the bass line making for lush harmonic sounds and a deceptively complex, well, James Taylor-esque divinity.
Mean Speed Theory Inclusion—My sister used to play James’ greatest hits all the time—usually getting ready for high school in the morning—a time of day I truly did not like, and so this song used to make me angry---I wasn’t feeling very “James” those mornings. Most importantly, as noted, the speed range itself could practically be called “James Taylor Speed,” and this song is still a classic played by James every concert.
The song was recorded live in the studio. In over 4 minutes, when all the speed of all the measures are seen as a trend, there is actually a tiny deceleration from start to end—about 1-2%. While flirting with the meanspeed area 77 _ at times during the songs beginning and end, and also taking a couple of measure during the song that flirt in the 70-71 bpm area, the song is all about all the love between 73-76 bpm.

SO: while this song is still at the speed of grace, the actual speed of orgasm begins at 100 contractions per minute, not the crudely measured and slower--and for decades accepted as axiomatic until precise anal probes measured the speed at 25% faster than Masters & Johnson's original 75 pulses per minute.

The Speed of Sexual Climax--James Taylor Speed in action: "Something In The Way She Moves" meanemotion=grace, meanspeed=75.0 pulses per minute

These are speed graphs of the song "Something In The Way She Moves" by the singer-songwriter-performer James Taylor

Lyrical and Musical Expression of Song—well, the song has a frequency at exactly the speed of sexual peek/orgasm, and the first line is “There’s something in the way she moves…that seems to leave this troubled world behind.” Enough said about lyrical content. Well, in fact, there is a line in the song about how James’ love is so strong and overpowering that he loves to hear everything his lover is saying—then again, her words are so beautiful he doesn’t “much matter what they mean.” This is a performer in the throes of unconditional yet calm ecstasy over romantic love. Musically, it features lush vocals, slide guitar, mellow rock drums, multi-tracked vocal harmonies, and signature James Taylor “make it sound easy even though it is not” guitar work.
I always thought this song expressed grace in the ultimate expression of beatific, if indulgent, polished elegance. Second, I always thought James, whose work has helped me with this work to an immeasurable degree, got the short end of the stick when people generally thought that George Harrison written Beatles song “Something” was borrowed by James to write this. In fact, it was George Harrison who was so impressed by this song that he wrote a song based on it. Also, another song for me that reminds me of the Sting quote “happy songs make me miserable.” This is another of those songs where James Taylor sounds to me like he is in such a mellowed yet ecstatic state.
Although the first 20 seconds or so of the song come from the top speeds found within, about 78 bpms, the song, like the Beatles’ Let It Be follows a fairly pronounced linear trend in a decelerating manner, small section by small section. Deceleration percentage: about 6-8%--fairly steep, especially as it is axiomatic human physiology for people to accelerate at about 3-5% during the course of a song, Again, we see the familiar 73-78 bpm outside range, with no threat of the bitterness of the meanspeed despite the flirtations with the border and even playing a few measures inside of the Bittersweet category.

More on the speed of orgasm, from www.meanspeed.com:

"The Closing of The American Mind equated sex with rock and popular music to such an extent that Professor Bloom was at the time naive and grandiose about his knowledge of music and its relation to sexuality. Professor Bloom, apparently did not read his Masters & Johnson or Kinsey before he wrote his chapter about popular music and its relevance to the sex act. There are indeed "rhythms," involved with the sex act, including results obtained through EEGs, CAT scans, PET scans, MRIs, fMRIs. The only instance where a man and woman have the same tempo for any time at all is at the point of orgasm—specifically, the genitals and sphincter of both men and women strongly contract in rhythm 6-10 times, slowing down until they stop. The speed? 76 pulses per minute, at the peak, slowing down unto the stop. This physiology is axiomatic sexuality."

The Marvin-Gaye-Effect: In action, Natalie Merchant, 10,000 Maniacs-"What's The Matter Here" meanemotion=enthusiastic. Terrible dramas, but not mine!

The song expressed in pure speed on the charts above is called What’s The Matter Here? and is performed by the 10,000 Maniacs. The song represents the Marvin Gaye Effect in full action. In the song, Natalie Merchant tells the story of horror: a child is being beaten with (a) barbarity and (b) in public and (c) no one is doing a thing about it! All turn a blind eye in this song’s lyrics.
Yet, it is a gentle song at the speed of natural. How much parts of an explanation for such are mainly these, in my opinion: (1) though the songs are about negative circumstances, such circumstances are not affecting the band or singer, and (2) someone else’s pain is always easier to bear than our own. And there’s the make ‘Em a saint factor! Face it: people to this minute revere Marvin Gaye as a “saint,” and any of you who have been lucky enough to see Natalie in concert have seen her fans that are, well…fans beyond fans—she does indeed have a [saintly aura]—I’ve seen Natalie Merchant twice in concert and one of her shows—October 1995, at the Beacon Theater on the Upper West Side of NYC, blocks from John Lennon's house and garden, the Tigerlily Tour—she put on one of the most amazing displays I’ve ever seen—she danced and sang in a frenzied and controlled perfection, and by the end of the concert she was passed out a la Janis Joplin or, at times, Bruce “The Boss” Springsteen.

The MeanFrequencies™ of What’s The Matter Here are interesting in that the beats per minute multiplied by 256 divided by 60 yields literally the pitch equivalent of the note ‘Ab.’ See, Stephen Jay's Theory of Harmonic Rhythm, as linked as a single from the CD MTV Unpugged, 10,000 Maniacs are:
meanspeed=97.3 beats per minute.
meanemotion=enthusiastic
meanspace=617 milliseconds per beat.
meanphase=1.62 cycles per second.
meanpitch=415.147 Hertz, 1/2 cent below G#4/Ab4=415.305 Hertz, 99 1/2 cents above A4=440 Hertz.

Happy Birthday Sting & Michael Rutherford of Genesis & Mike And The Mechanics of course!
